My first Bundesliga 1 game of the year

I am off to see Mönchen Gladbach vs. Cottbus today. I’m not really much of a fan of the top league, as my team (Fortuna) is in the third league down. Anyway, if I was forced to pick a top league team to go for it would definitely be Mönchen Gladbach.

I have seen Borussia a few times before and they have the best atmosphere I have ever experienced at a live club game. I am very excited.

Things I like

Hi, my name is M, but many daddies call me a Bemble of one kind or another. Mummies simply call me Sausage.

I like to eat lots of things. I like bananas, grapes, yoghurt, cookies, sultanas, peaches, pears, pineapples and cheese. I really, really like cheese. If you have cheese you should give it to me, otherwise I will have to point at it saying ‘more’ until you surrender and give it to me.

I also like Pommes, which many people call chips and some people call french fries. Anyway, here is a picture of me so that you know what I look like, so that when you see me you can give me cheese.

Panicky Parents

M was out of sorts last night; obviously unwell. It was really stressful, but because Alex stayed calm (Derek helped a lot with that) I stayed calm. I have never worried so much about somone ever before and so today was one of those god awful tired days, like I had been out on the piss to all hours of the morning and gotten no sleep; except without the having drunk a lot of piss part.

M was much better today. Phew. This all made me think about parents in general, which generally leads me to the topic of the parents of my students, which generally leads me to all the times I have had parents say foolish things or make ridiculous demands. This generally makes me think how lovely it would be to be able to tell it like it is to parents without any sugar coating.

It would be like:
Me: Your son is a selfish little shit with no social skills.
Parents: Gasp
Me: But it’s not really his fault.
Parents: Phew
Me: Oh no, it’s your fault for being such crap parents.
Parents: What!
Me: Well if you had been consistent with him then the rigors of school would not be so alien and unnavigable to him and therefore he would cope.

Conspiracy theory #22
Ritalin was invented so that doctors would be less frequently punched in the face by terrible parents.

Snovember

M managed to have a snowy weekend. It snowed four times yesterday and today and we were out in it on three of those occasions. It hasn’t snowed enough yet to move from being cool to being a pain in the arse and it probably won’t. Last year it snowed a bunch of times, but never stayed on the ground for longer than a few hours. i think the last time it hung around was three years ago when it stayed on the ground for a few days and managed to disrupt infrastructure.

This is the view from our bedroom window.

Option Five

Naomi coined the phrase ‘Option Five’ in reference to people who dither inappropriately. I suppose there are a lot of inappropriate dithering circumstances, like whilst caught in a burning building or when a horde of zombies has picked you to be lunch, but these are less common dithering situations.

The top two most annoying inappropriate dithering locales are:

1. At the bottom (or top) of escalators (or stairs) and is usually accompanied by lots of looking around to see what comes next whilst simultaneously standing in the way of those of us who know where we are going.

2. Just outside of the train doors after getting off the train and while still many people have yet to disembarkate*. This is another choke point and can really cause a people jam.

Also

It is bloody freezing. I know this to be true because I was just outside and within two minutes of waiting for the tram my ear had started to hurt. Apparently tomorrow it is going to be 6 degrees colder. Brrrrrrr.

Computer games are a waste of time

I was having brunch at a friend’s house on Saturday and she was telling us about an article she had read, about social workers who had the job of working with people that played 16 hours a day of video games. I think she brought it up because she knows I like video games and used to play on line a few hours a week with her husband; he still plays on Monday nights.

It got me wondering about the way I spend my now diminished free time, as (apart from two evenings of Starcraft in July) I have not played computer games since December last year. I think it is a personal priority issue and for me computer games are a waste of time and to be honest I rarely miss them. My free time is roughly a quarter of what it used to be and now I must spend it wisely.

It’s funny how computer games are considered a waste of time, when reading a book is not.

So genannte Fans im Wuppertaler Block warfen wiederholt Feuerwerkskörper auf den eigenen Torwart.

I went with a couple of mates to the Fortuna game yesterday and it was amazing. The game was exciting as both teams played some quality football, but that wasn’t all. Five minutes in, the Wuppertalers threw a flare down at their own goal keeper. Idiots. They also let off a few more in their stand and were completely obscured by smoke. When they scored in the 26th minute they threw more flares onto the pitch and the fire brigade had to run on and retrieve them.

It was at this point that the teams decided to walk off the pitch for 20 minutes while the riot police set up a cordon of intimidation in front of the naughty fans. Twenty minutes later when the teams came back on, the fans were warned that if anything else happened the game would be abandoned.

The game ended 3-1 for Fortuna and we got to laugh at the Wuppertalers in the knowledge that their club will be fined for their stupidity. They were very quiet at the end.

Outcry over terrorist death party

The Bali bombers are about to be executed and when they do, their supporters will put on a party that will have lots of media coverage. This will ‘outrage’ our news organisations and the media tough guys will talk their normal, impotent shit and it will be reported that the average Australian is offended by these shameless acts of insensitivity.

Who gives a shit. The stupid fuckers will be dead and good riddance. We shouldn’t focus on their supporters having a laugh. We had the last laugh and it stuck. What did the Russians do with the corpses of Chechnyan terrorists from the cinema hostage crisis a few years ago? I wonder how many acts of suicide terror will be made in Moscow again, by folk who may want to go to that grand villa (with 74 virgins) in the sky.

Has America been reset to its default state?

Does the democrats being returned to power mean that the US is back to normal again? People have been trying to convince me that there will be a big difference. I don’t disagree with them, but I am a little more reserved. I want to believe we will see some big improvements, so I will keep my fingers crossed, but I won’t go as far as holding my breath.

I have been looking at lists of the top ten presidents of all time and the most recent I could find (discounting crazy lists) was Eisenhower (Clinton got some honourable mentions) who completed his term in 1961. So it is 47 years since someone in the world’s top job has stood out as a true great. Has the idealistic statesman style gone out of fashion? Is it cynical of me to suggest that money plays a role in this?
